India’s instant-payment revolution is dramatically shrinking the time banks have to stop digital fraud. Discussions at the Global Fintech Festival 2026 highlighted that the traditional 15-minute intervention window could now be just 30–60 seconds, as stolen funds move rapidly through networks of mule accounts.
This speed is forcing banks to move beyond conventional rule-based transaction monitoring. A transaction may appear legitimate in isolation, but changes in device, transaction velocity, beneficiary relationships, location and connections between accounts can reveal a broader fraud network.
The RBI Innovation Hub’s MuleHunter.AI represents an important step toward AI/ML-driven mule-account detection. Similarly, the government’s Financial Fraud Risk Indicator (FRI) enables banks and UPI providers to use real-time risk intelligence associated with mobile numbers. By August 2026, FRI had reportedly helped prevent suspected fraud losses worth ₹5,043.73 crore.
However, increasingly sophisticated fraud—including AI-enabled impersonation, deepfakes and social engineering—means transaction monitoring alone may not provide a complete defence. Banks must determine not only whether a transaction is abnormal, but whether the person initiating it is behaving like the legitimate account holder.
This is where the next generation of fraud prevention must evolve. A transaction-pattern model can identify unusual financial activity, but transaction history and human behavioural analysis are different signals. A more dynamic approach could combine transaction intelligence with multimodal signals such as behavioural biometrics, device intelligence, identity verification, liveness, voice and deepfake detection. Training machine-learning systems across these correlated signals could provide richer real-time risk assessment.
Therefore, MuleHunter.AI should be viewed as an important layer, not a foolproof solution. The future lies in multimodal, continuously adaptive fraud intelligence capable of understanding the transaction, network, device and behaviour together—within seconds.
