Cloudera has launched Anywhere Cloud, a modular data and AI platform designed to operate across public clouds, private data centers, sovereign infrastructure and even air-gapped environments. Unveiled at Evolve 2026 in Singapore, the platform reflects a major enterprise shift: organizations increasingly want AI capabilities without surrendering control over where their data resides or operates.

Anywhere Cloud provides a single control plane for deploying data engineering, streaming, workflow orchestration, lakehouse and AI services. Instead of moving sensitive enterprise data into the public cloud, organizations can bring compute and AI capabilities to where the data already lives, improving sovereignty, security and governance.
ExxonMobil is among the early design partners. Its initial deployment reportedly took around six hours, but subsequent improvements reduced provisioning of four major Cloudera services to approximately 65 minutes. The company plans to use the platform for streaming industrial data and eventually applying AI to detect equipment problems and support engineers with faster root-cause analysis.
Cost is another major driver. Cloudera CEO Charles Sansbury argues that continuously operating workloads—such as banking fraud detection—can sometimes be significantly more expensive in public clouds than on enterprise-owned infrastructure. Conversely, short-term workloads with highly variable computing requirements may remain better suited to public cloud environments.
Anywhere Cloud therefore promotes a workload-first hybrid strategy. Enterprises can determine where each AI workload should run based on economics, performance, security, governance and sovereignty instead of adopting a cloud-only architecture.
The launch also puts Cloudera into closer competition with Databricks. While Databricks can connect its cloud control plane to enterprise data that remains on-premises, Cloudera emphasizes the ability to deploy its platform directly within customer-controlled environments—including sovereign and air-gapped infrastructure.
The timing is significant. Cloudera says 95% of surveyed enterprises delayed or cancelled AI initiatives because of governance, compliance or regulatory issues, while 84% experienced rising AI infrastructure costs. Two-thirds reportedly moved at least some AI workloads from public clouds toward private cloud or on-premises infrastructure. Enterprise AI is evolving from “cloud first” toward “run AI where the data belongs.”
