India has emerged as a global digital payments leader, supported by technology innovation, progressive regulation and rapidly expanding payment infrastructure.

The RBI Digital Payments Index reached 516.8 by September 2025, reflecting deeper adoption and stronger payment-enabling infrastructure across the country.

Physical and digital acceptance has expanded dramatically. PoS terminals increased from 45.2 lakh in May 2021 to 115.3 lakh in May 2026, while Bharat QR and UPI QR deployments reached 7,854 lakh.

Digital payment volumes recorded a 37.9% CAGR between FY2019-20 and FY2024-25, driven primarily by frequent, low-value transactions.

UPI remains the dominant engine, recording 24,162 crore transactions worth ₹314.23 lakh crore in FY2025-26. PhonePe and Google Pay together accounted for 79.5% of UPI volumes in May 2026.

Meanwhile, credit cards, wallets, FASTag and Bharat Connect continue addressing specialized payment requirements as consumer preferences diversify.

The next transformation will come from agentic AI, IoT-enabled payments and cross-border UPI. As payments become increasingly intelligent and invisible, security, fraud prevention, interoperability and regulatory compliance will become critical to sustaining India's digital-payment leadership.
