Company halts fresh subscriptions to its priciest tier as its newest flagship model strains computing capacity, though current Pro users keep uninterrupted access to all features.
OpenAI has temporarily suspended new sign-ups for its $200-a-month Pro subscription tier, citing overwhelming demand for its latest and most capable model, Astra. The pause was disclosed by Thibault Sottiaux, a product leader at the company, in a post on X, who said the surge was putting significant strain on OpenAI's server infrastructure.
Existing users unaffected, other plans stay open
Sottiaux explained that Pro-tier usage was consuming a disproportionate share of computing resources, and pausing new sign-ups was the least disruptive way to keep service broadly accessible. He clarified that the API and all other subscription tiers remain open to new users. Those still wanting access to Astra can do so through the API or the more affordable Go and Plus plans.
This isn't the first sign of strain. Days earlier, on September 9, Sottiaux had acknowledged that OpenAI was contending with "unprecedented" demand, noting that despite having weathered rapid growth phases before, the current surge was unlike anything the company had previously experienced. He said the company's priority would remain protecting service quality for existing subscribers, warning at the time that a pause on new Pro sign-ups was possible if demand kept climbing.
Astra's launch fuelled the rush
The pressure traces back to Astra's debut on September 3, when OpenAI rolled out the model across its full customer base — Pro, Plus, Business and Enterprise accounts alike. The company marketed Astra as a major leap forward in reasoning, coding and computer-use capabilities, even framing its release as the opening chapter of what it called the "AGI era." That messaging appears to have driven a sharp spike in user interest, adding further load to systems already stretched thin.
Despite the pause on new Pro subscriptions, OpenAI has stressed that current Pro members will notice no change — their access remains full and uninterrupted. New users interested in Astra's capabilities still have multiple entry points, including Plus subscriptions, Enterprise accounts, or direct API access.
For now, the restriction on new Pro sign-ups appears to be a stop-gap measure, allowing OpenAI to safeguard performance for its existing user base while it works to expand the computing infrastructure needed to support Astra's demand over the longer term. The company has not indicated when new Pro subscriptions might reopen.
