The new Windows CE-based HT680 is lightyears ahead in terms of technology. Despite its ruggedness, the HT680 is actually much smaller than it looks. Measuring just 6.7x2.1 inches and being just over an inch thick, the device feels more like a large smartphone but actually fits into many pockets. It also is not very heavy at about 320 grams. So, this is one rugged industrial terminal that never gets in the way.
Do not, however, expect bleeding edge technology. Like hundreds of thousands of industrial handhelds, the HT680 is based on Marvell's PXA270 processor, a competent workhorse chip Marvell inherited from Intel when they bought part of Intel's mobile processor business. And, indicative of Microsoft's current lack of a clear direction with its mini operating systems, the new HT680 does not run the latest version of Windows Mobile or the Windows CE platform WinMo is based on, but they also tried-and-true Windows CE 5.0.
The optional gun grip and 12-hour battery life makes the HT680 perfect for scan-intensive applications such as warehousing. Its 22-key backlit keypad makes data entry simple.
The HT680 is available with a 1D laser or 2D imager smart scanner. Configuration and integration of the HT680 is fast and easy with its Microsoft Windows CE 5.0 Professional Plus operating system and Marvell PXA270 520MHz CPU. The HT680 is equipped with Bluetooth 2.0 and EDGE-GPRS connectivity as well as CCX4 WLAN roaming capability, making it perfect for mobile applications.
